You may have noticed an AMG vehicle at your local dealer and wondered what makes it different from the other Mercedes-Benz automobiles on the lot. Back in the 1960s, two automotive engineers, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, begin fine-tuning Mercedes-Benz vehicles with the goal of developing and testing racing engines. The two engineers were responsible for working on the 300 SE racing engine in the Daimler-Benz Development department. Aufrecht and Melcher had a passion for Motorsports and continued to hone the performance engine—even after Daimler-Benz discontinued all Motorsports activities.

The 1965 German Touring Car Championship winner featured a 300 SE engine that was developed by Aufrecht and Melcher. This vehicle won a total of ten times. This helped to boost the reputation of Aufrecht and Melcher as experts in optimizing engines for Motorsports.

In 1966, Aufrecht and Melcher founded AMG. AMG engines became a must for private racing teams. The name AMG became synonymous with high-performance. The AMG badge is named for the surnames of its founders, while the G comes from Großaspach –the birthplace of Aufrecht.

Over the years, AMG equipped more and more Mercedes models with performance technology. In the late 1980s, AMG started working with Daimler-Benz— as an official racing partner. The Mercedes-AMG 190 won a total of 50 DTM victories between 1988 and 1993.

By 1990, AMG products were sold through Mercedes-Benz’ worldwide network of company-owned dealerships and service outlets. In 1990, a third AMG Mercedes-Benz plant has opened the workforce was increased to 400 employees. In 1993, the company unveiled the first jointly developed vehicle—the Mercedes-Benz C 36 AMG.
